2024/25 English Premier League
Matchday 4
Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
London, England
Sunday, 15 September 2024
Kick-off is at 16h00

The first major derby of the new Premier League season sees Tottenham lock horns with fierce North London rivals Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, September 15 in the early kick-off.

The power has shifted back to the Gunners in the northern part of the capital after Spurs lost this fixture just two times during Mauricio Pochettino's tenure from 2014 to 2019.

Mikel Arteta's side are unbeaten in their last four derby meetings and did the league double over the Lilywhites in 2022-23.

Arsenal saw their perfect start to the campaign come to an end on August 31 with a 1-1 draw against Brighton at the Emirates Stadium and they trail joint-league leaders Manchester City and Liverpool by two points in fourth place.

Tottenham suffered their first defeat on matchday 3 after going down 2-1 to Newcastle at St James' Park, having picked up four points from their opening two games.

Ange Postecoglou's side kicked off proceedings with a 1-1 draw at Leicester and registered their first win of the season five days later as they thrashed Everton 4-0.

Spurs remain in the top half of the table on goal difference ahead of West London duo Chelsea (11th) and Fulham (12th).

Declan Rice will miss the clash after he was sent off for two bookable offences early in the second half against the Seagulls, with Arteta admitting it changed the context of the game.

"We started the game really well. We created three or four big chances that we didn't convert, unfortunately. Then we had a period where we had some problems, especially the giveaway that we gave after regaining the ball, but we scored a really good goal," the Spaniard said.

"We were on top of the match, we started the second half really well and, in that moment, the referee makes a decision that obviously changes the course of the game for us. And then still like this, the team reacted amazingly, the crowd reacted amazingly, and we should have won the game.

"We had to adapt to the context, we thought it (the referring) was very inconsistent. And he made one decision, by the book he can make, but he totally missed to make the second one, and we should have played 10 against 10."

Postecoglou was left to ponder another strong performance from his players that yielded nothing on Tyneside, although he felt the game should have been dead and buried before Alexander Isak scored the winner in the 78th minute.

"The crowd create a pretty strong atmosphere for the home side, little things go their way but I thought for the most part we handled that really well," he said.

"Then we gained the ascendancy in the game and we just needed to kill it off and we didn't and a disappointing second goal. I thought we switched off a little bit but the game should have been well over by then.

"So, another sore one unfortunately where we haven't got the rewards for our play, but ultimately it's three strong performances from the first three games. The results don't reflect it in that way."
