As one of the feature bouts of Matchday 12 in Serie A this weekend, Inter Milan and AC Milan will do battle at the popular San Siro on Sunday, with the former eager to build forward momentum in the league title race.
Inter currently lead the way in Serie A after collecting 24 points in 11 matches so far. Along with Inter’s upward trajectory, Cristian Chivu and his charges collected maximum points in each of their last three encounters, namely against Fiorentina, Verona and Lazio respectively.
Milan on the other hand sit in third position and bagged two wins and three draws in their last handful of Serie A ties.
While Milan climbed their way up the table, Massimiliano Allegri’s men jotted down a frustrating 2-2 draw against Parma last time out. With top spot up for grabs, Milan are two points away from the summit, while second placed AS Roma have picked up the same amount of points as Inter (24).
Speaking ahead of the keenly anticipated Milan Derby, Inter president Beppe Marotta was full of praise for Chivu and his immediate impact at the club as they look to bag their first Serie A title since the 2023/24 campaign.
“I’m surprised people were shocked by Cristian’s quality,” Marotta said.
“We chose him because he represents important values. It took courage to go against the tide, even from a media perspective. Some even called for Mourinho. With all due respect, if I hadn’t had that courage, I would have regretted it.”
As for Allegri, the Milan coach expressed his frustration at his side’s inability to bag maximum points last time out.
“Two points thrown away. I don’t know how it would have ended if we had finished the first half 2-0. We came back onto the pitch dazed, we were really asleep,” Allegri said.
“If you go 2-0 up you can’t concede that goal in the 48th minute, you have to kick the ball into the stands. We should have gone forward and played with more clarity.”
