It’s a mixed bag this weekend for racing fans. While the local programme is short on sparkle, Saturday’s card at Turffontein presents a tough Pick 6 puzzle with the possibility of a good payout, and
HWB Greyville rounds out the local action with an open polytrack programme on Sunday.
For those looking abroad for inspiration, the spotlight shines on the July Course at Newmarket, where top-class group racing on both Friday and Saturday features some of the best in training.
De Kock Racing has three runners at the Turffontein standside meeting on Saturday. Mat de Kock has provided comments for this, and the meeting on Wednesday at HWB Greyville.
Turffontein, Saturday, 12 July:
Race 2, 1160m: “Here we have a first-up runner in
Babette’s Feast, a daughter of Hawwaam. She is showing us quality work. She’ll need further in time, but based on her work she has strong eachway claims.”
Race 4, 1160m: “Miss Argonaut won a very nice race for us first time out, on the Highveld. She has made more improvement since. This is competitive, but she should be included in all bets, a decent filly.”
Race 7, 1600m: “Wecangoallnight caught the eye last week, he moved up nicely, he is getting closer. We’ve elected to back him up quickly as he is doing well and this looks like a race in which he can make the top three. We’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t earn a stake cheque.”
HWB Greyville, Wednesday 13 July:
Race 1, 1200m: “A first run on the Poly for
Gotta Go Eddie after three nice starts on turf, getting closer. Ultimately, he is another who will need a bit more ground, but he has made some natural improvement going into this race and from a good draw he has good eachway claims.”
Race 4, 1800m: “We expected just a little better from
Corrupt when he made his debut for us a few weeks ago. But what that 1600m run did show us, was that he appears to want the extra distance. He should be included in all bets, still showing excellent work.”
Race 6, 1000m: “We’ve had a few experimental runs with
Mojo Man, but they didn’t have the desired effect. We’re bringing him back to his tried and tested 1000m, with a 4kg claimer on his back. Hopefully that will make a big difference. We’re also putting blinkers back on, hoping he can bounce back and be very competitive. Include him.”

Betway has good odds on the board for Friday’s Group 1 Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes (Race 4, 1600m), a contest for fillies and mares which has produced some illustrious winners in the last 20 years, including Goldikova and Soviet Song.
This year’s race has a few current big names in the line-up – Aiden O’Brien’s January, Charlie Appleby’s Cinderella’s Dream and John and Thady Gosden’s Crimson Advocate. O’Brien has won the race twice, Gosden’s stable got the verdict three times but it is one of the few major trophies Godolphin’s Appleby hasn’t added to his silverware.
In Cinderella’s Dream (7-2), Appleby has a bright chance of breaking the ice. She’s a serial top performer at high level, never out of the first two in 11 career starts, and has a pull at the weights with Crimson Advocate, who lowered her colours in the recent Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Ascot.
Appleby has another big chance in Saturday’s Group 1 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup Stakes over 1200m (Race 6), for which Notable Speech was supplemented in the absence of current star sprinters. He is a miler, but the stable reported earlier this week that his work is very good at home, and a big run is expected.
