2020 Super Rugby
Round 1
Sharks v Bulls
Kings Park, Durban
Friday 31 January
Kick-off 19:10
The Sharks will be on the hunt for a season-opening victory when they welcome the Bulls to Kings Park Stadium in Durban on Friday 31 January 2020, kick-off at 19:10. The match is one of seven across Friday and Saturday for Round 1 of the new
Super Rugby season.
The Sharks will be looking to improve on an average 2019 season in which they finished sixth on the overall log table and were eliminated in the quarterfinals by the Brumbies.
The Durban side boasts one of the most talented sets of backs in the tournament – including the likes of Sanele Nohamba, Curwin Bosch, Lukhanyo Am, Makazole Mapimpi, Sbu Nkosi and Aphelele Fassi – and will be aiming to play a fast and flowing style under coach Sean Everitt in 2020.

“We have identified how we need to play going forward and we’ve resolved that seeing so many tries are scored in modern rugby off breakdown ball, that is something we need to prioritise,” explained Everitt, who has named debutant James Venter as a specialist fetcher to aid their new approach.
Everitt has been in charge of the Sharks since last year’s Currie Cup and is pleased with the progress made thus far: “The culture is a work-on, you don’t get the final product immediately. We came a long way with it in the Currie Cup and the attitude in pre-season training has been amazing... the effort, and work rate in difficult conditions has been very pleasing.”
The Bulls have had the wood over the Sharks in Super Rugby in recent years, putting together a five-match winning run against the Durban team which includes a narrow 19-16 triumph when the teams last met, in March 2019 in Kings Park.
The Sharks’ last Super Rugby win over the Bulls was way back in February 2014: a 31-16 triumph on home soil.
