The Clever Boys bounced back from defeat in the league against Highlands Park by beating Black Leopards 3-2 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw after extra-time, to book their place in the quarter-finals of this season’s Nedbank Cup.
Wits have suffered just two defeats in seven outings since the turn of year although they have only registered two wins from a possible five in the ABSA Premiership during that period as Gavin Hunt’s side has seen their lead at the summit slashed to just a couple of points heading into this crucial clash.

Masandawana missed the opportunity to go top of the table when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Polokwane City on Tuesday following goalkeeper Dennis Onyango’s inexplicable howler that led to City’s equaliser. Pitso Mosimane’s men, like this weekend’s opposition, have notched up just two wins from their last five matches in the league, amidst all of Sundowns continental duties in the CAF Champions League.
Emiliano Tade and Lebohang Maboe will be looking to add to their respective tallies against Wits on Saturday. The pair have scored 5 goals apiece in the league this season although both have failed to find the back of the net in either of Masandawna’s last two matches – both of which ended in draws.

If Gavin Hunt’s chargers are to claim an unlikely second-ever ABSA Premiership title in their history, Saturday’s encounter could prove to be pivotal. The quest to their maiden success in 2016/17 saw them edge Sundowns 1-0 in this fixture in May 2017 thanks to a first-half goal from Ben Motshwari.
Wits have won three of their last five home meetings with Sundowns.
The corresponding fixture last season ended 2-0 to the visitors, as Pitso Mosimane’s men reclaimed the PSL crown from the Clever Boys. Khama Billiat was the star of the show that evening, bagging a brace for the Brazilians.
The pair played out to 1-1 stalemate in the reverse fixture back in October.
