The field for next Saturday’s R6-million Grade 1
Betway Summer Cup at Turffontein was announced on Wednesday, and a capacity field of 20 runners will be going to post in Africa’s richest race.
Betway Ambassador Mike de Kock has a record nine Summer Cup trophies to his name. He last won the race with Flirtation in 2010 and alongside Mathew de Kock will be saddling another filly, Spumante Dolce, this year.
The daughter of Vercingetorix drew in the middle of the field at number 10, which will give jockey Callan Murray options to place her in the race.
Betway has priced up for the contest – offering the best value available, including 3.2-1 on the ante-post favourite, The Equator (between 2-1 and 2.7 to 1 elsewhere), and as much as 26-1 on Spumante Dolce.
Mike and Mathew have runners at three meetings ahead of Cup Day, and Mat has commented below:
Turffontein, Sunday 22 November:
Race 4, 1000m: “Constellation is in a good space, and he has a nice pole position draw for the inside track. It’s not easy for a three-year-old to win under top weight, but we are confident that he can win this.”
HWB Greyville, Tuesday 25 November:
Race 4, 1400m: “Queen Of Pearls is better than her last run. She went to a mile and just pulled too hard, not finishing the race off. So we’re bringing her back to 1400m and hoping that she’ll get some cover from her inside draw so that she can settle and deliver her best. She has some prospects with a 4kg claimer on board.”
Race 5, 1200m: “Beamonesque is in a good vein of form. He goes back to turf and he’s well drawn again. He should give a good account, we give him a good eachway chance.”
Race 7, 1600m: “We have
Ingqwele and
Gota Go Eddie in the same race. Ingqwele found a lot of traffic in his last start and still ran a decent race. He has a good gate now and should get all the favours. Gota Go Eddie is a tough young horse. They are both doing very well at the moment and both can earn a stake here with eachway chances.”
Vaal, Thursday 27 November:
Race 1, 1200m: “Emerald Forge was a little disappointing over 1000m last time but it was probably a bit short for her. She seems to have come on from that run, so we’re expecting better. Eachway chance.”
Race 2, 1700m: “Gonna Catch You’s work at home is certainly better than what he has shown on the track so far. He’s only had one run as a gelding, another run was rained out recently. We look forward to seeing how he goes over the 1700m, and we’re expecting an improved run. He is worth including.”

Aristocratic is one of several top three-year-olds from Dean Kannemeyer’s stable. He has been racing over distances short of his best, but steps up to 1600m in Race 7 at HWB Kenilworth on Saturday, the R500,000 Grade 2 Race Coast Punters Cup over 1600m. He’s a colt that’s always looked classy and promising, and proved that against older horses when he ran fourth in the Grade 3 Matchem Stakes. He is easy to back in the 10-1 range on the Betway boards.
