WBA Welterweight Championship
Manny Pacquiao v Adrien Broner
Sunday, 20 January 2019
MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, United States
Manny Pacquiao will look to defend his World Boxing Association Welterweight title when he faces Adrien Broner at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, United States on Sunday 20 January 2019.
Many doubted Pacquiao’s ability to compete at the highest level after coming out of retirement, especially after suffering a defeat (albeit a highly contentious one) in Australia to Jeff Horn in July 2017.
Yet the ‘Pac Man’ returned to the peak of his powers in July last year when he defeated Lucas Martin Matthysse on a TKO in Kuala Lumpur to win the WBA Welterweight championship.
His challenger is Adrien Broner, a 29-year-old American who was once touted as the heir to Floyd Mayweather’s throne but is looking to shrug off a reputation of being a career underachiever.
Broner’s three career defeats have come against current or former world champions in Marcos Maidana, Shawn Porter and Mikey Garcia. Whether he can step up to the plate against one of the all-time greats in Pacquiao remains to be seen.
Should Broner find a way to victory on Sunday, it could catapult him back into true world title contention.
