2019 Formula 1 season, Round 4
Azerbaijan Grand Prix
Baku City Circuit, Baku
Sunday 28 April
Lewis Hamilton will be out to extend his lead at the top of the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship when the season heads to Round 4, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit, on Sunday 28 April.
The five-time champion comes into the race on the back of two successive victories at the Bahrain and Chinese Grands Prix. While Hamilton’s success at the former event owed plenty to misfortune for Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, there was nothing lucky about the win in Shanghai.
Hamilton started on the front row, beat his teammate Valtteri Bottas into the first corner and controlled the race from then, with his victory never really looking under any threat. In fact, the Brit led his teammate home for a third consecutive 1-2 finish for the ‘Silver Arrows’.
Taking three straight 1-2 finishes at the start of a Formula 1 season has not been achieved since Williams in 1992, and there are real fears that Mercedes will completely dominate the campaign ahead of Ferrari and Red Bull.
Hamilton himself leads the Drivers’ Championship by six points (68 to 62) over Bottas, while third-placed Max Verstappen is way back (39 points).
The Baku City Circuit often produces thrills and spills, but Hamilton will back himself to take the chequered flag first, much as he did a year ago. With Mercedes’ dominance, the only question is whether Bottas can raise his game and ensure we see a fight for top spot.
