South Africa will make history when they debut in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, participating in Group B from 8-17 June.
Banyana Banyana secured their place at the global showpiece in France by finishing second at the 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations at the back end of last year.
SA’s debut match at the WWC will come in their Group B opener against Spain at Stade Oceane in Le Havre on Saturday 8 June. The Spanish secured their berth at the tournament by dominating their qualification group against Austria, Finland, Serbia and Israel.
Banyana then move onto a clash against China PR at Parc des Princes in Paris on Thursday 13 June. The teams have met once before, with the Asians claiming a 2-0 win in a 2016 Olympic Games clash in Rio de Janeiro.
SA wrap up Group B with a clash against Germany at Stade de la Mosson in Montpellier on Monday 17 June. Die Nationalelf are one of the favourites for the 2019 WWC and boast two previous World Cup titles – 2003 and 2007.
Banyana coach Desiree Ellis will look to the likes of captain Janine van Wyk and experienced campaigners such as Noko Matlou and Nothando Vilakazi to lead the team to a strong showing on their tournament debut.
