Gymnastics has been a staple at the
Olympic Games since the birth of the modern era in 1896 and the competition is expected to be fierce in all three categories this year, starting on Saturday, July 27.
The qualification process has been simplified and modified from Tokyo 2020, giving gymnasts an opportunity to earn more spots in the various disciplines.
China topped the medal table in 2020 with 11 (4 gold, 5 silver, 2 bronze) and they were closely followed by Russia on 10 (2 gold, 4 silver, 4 bronze), with USA's tally of six (2 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze) placing them third.
Liu Yang (rings), Zou Jingyuan (parallel bars), Guan Chenchen (balance beam) and Zhu Xueying (women's individual) were the standout performers for China, who claimed a one-two in three of those events.
China (69) are ranked fourth in the overall medal standings, but with 20 gymnasts competing at Paris 2024, they could close the gap to Japan (103) in third place.
Of the four gold medalists at Tokyo 2020, only Guan Chenchen is absent from the team for this year's Games after she retired in October 2022 to focus on her studies.
Zhu followed up her victory in Tokyo with a gold medal at her first Asian Games in Hangzhou last year, while she won the Varna and Baku meets of the Trampoline World Cup earlier this year, and hopes her hard work will pay off in Paris.
"My parents are often afraid that they might affect my performance, so they prefer not talk to me about anything at home," she said.
"And even though I have many achievements in the past, I think it is important not to carry my last performance into a new competition, as I can always keep improving through hard work."
