No. 6 seed Holger Rune will face arguably his toughest match of the year when he takes on world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals at
Wimbledon.
The young Dane, like Alcaraz, has already achieved his best run on the London grass by defeating Grigor Dimitrov 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the fourth round.
Rune bowed out in the first round on his debut at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club last year, but his game has gone from strength to strength in the 12 months that followed.
The 20-year-old has featured in three ATP Tour finals this year and won the Munich Open in April before going on to reach the quarter-finals at the French Open for the second time.
Rune needed five sets to get past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the third round after seeing off George Loffhagen (7-6, 6-3, 6-2) and Roberto Carballes Baena (6-3, 7-6, 6-4) with ease in the opening two rounds.
He paid tribute to Dimitrov for an intense battle on July 10, but was determined to march on in a bid to reach his first Grand Slam final, with Alcaraz next in his sights.
"Today was a crazy match. Grigor is an incredible player and he pushed me to the limit. We both pushed each other. I think it was a great match and a tough match," Rune said.
"I fight until the end always. That is what I focus on, especially when I am in a tough situation. I tell myself that there is Wimbledon once a year, so I am going to fight so I have a chance to win."
