Today's Racecards: Mike De Kocks picks

Sunday’s New Turf Carrier eThekwini Sprint over 1200m around the bend on the Polytrack at Greyville tops the bill for KZN racing fans, and this looks like a race in which a blanket finish is on the cards.

Four of the eight contenders are in the MR102- MR106 range but winning chances don’t stop with them, because the other four have done enough to warrant consideration, even the lowly rated filly Love Bite, whose trainer Fanie Bronkhorst is enjoying a purple patch of form.

Three among them make their debuts on the often tricky Polytrack which complicates matters even further, but let’s apply a process of elimination to pinpoint a possible winner.

Despite her trainers’ form, one can perhaps safely argue that Love Bite (MR78) is biting off more than she can chew against the mostly male opposition here and that she’s one for maximum Pick 6 Perms only.

With the form behind William Robertson in the Durban Dash as a guide, Barzalona holds Safe Return and former G1 winner Ambiorex, but the extra 100m and some exposed form on the Polytrack may well make a difference for Ambiorex, who signalled a return to his best in a race won by Gimme A Prince earlier this month and has a plum draw in his favour.

Justin Snaith’s filly Kwinta’s Light drops in class from feature company, but at 103 is perhaps rated a point or two above her ability and hence outweighted. The same goes for Mike de Kock’s runner Bold Act, who is battling to find her right distance and, though she’s dropped a rating point, has been assessed as one with “an eachway chance at best” by the Betway Ambassador.

We’re left with Dandilo Danilovitch and Mr Master Starter, the only runners in the field to have won on the Polytrack, and the latter in fact the only one to have won at the course and distance.

Dean Kannemeyer’s Mr Master Starter looks the most versatile of the pair. He’ll be doing his best work late, is on the upgrade and perhaps a point or two under-rated. He gets the narrowest of votes in what is likely to be a last 100m-scramble for the post.

Mike de Kock said that Beaded Gown, his only Monday runner, is a speedy filly returning to the track and trip of her recent Maiden win. “Beaded Gown takes on stronger and while she must have a chance, I’ll be happy with a place for her after her first win,” he noted.

Paul Peter, who set a South African record of 216 winners with two weeks left of the current season, should add to his tally at Turffontein, Saturday. The stable has winning chances with at least five of its 12 runners, and Lamborghreeni (Race 3) can lay the table for further successes in which the likes of Origami (Race 4), Sound Of Summer (Race 5), Mathis (Race 7) and Wind Sock (Race 9) should feature.
