Kevin Anderson on the hunt for first Grand Slam title

2019 Australian Open

14-27 January 2019

Melbourne Park, Victoria, Australia

South Africa’s Kevin Anderson will be on the hunt for his first Grand Slam title when the 2019 Australian Open gets underway at Melbourne Park on Monday, 14 January.

The 32-year-old has struggled at the tournament in the past (his best showing came in 2013, 2014 and 2015 when he reached the fourth round) and last year was eliminated in a first-round upset by Britain’s Kyle Edmund.

Kevin Anderson lost in the first round of the 2018 Australian Open to Kyle Edmund.

Yet Anderson is now a hardened veteran and has two Grand Slam final appearances under his belt, having got as far the championship match in both the 2017 US Open and last year’s Wimbledon.

He comes into the 2019 Australian Open as the fifth seed (at the time of writing) and will be regarded as one of the dark horses for the title.

Suggested photo: Kevin Anderson reached his second Grand Slam final at Wimbledon last year, but was beaten by Novak Djokovic.

His main challenge will come from the traditional powerhouses of the men’s game, such as defending champion Roger Federer, top seed Novak Djokovic and the injury-plagued Rafael Nadal.

In addition, rising stars such as Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem and Kei Nishikori will hope that 2019 is the year in which they end the dominance of the ‘old guard’.
