The 2020 MLB (Major League Baseball) season was set to get underway on the 26th of March, but had to be postponed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

It remains unclear when America's favourite pastime will resume with baseball, like all major sporting codes, currently exploring several new ideas as to combat the indefinite disruption and the challenges the pandemic brings.

The Washington Nationals are the current MLB champions following their World Series win over the Houston Astros last year.

Betway takes a look at the top 6 active MLB players heading into the 2020 season:

6. Mookie Betts (Los Angeles Dodgers)

The former Boston Red Sox right fielder joined the Los Angeles Dodgers in February. The 2018 American League (AL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) failed to replicate that sort of form last season, but still finished with 29 home runs, 40 doubles, 16 stolen bases and a .915 OPS.

Betts is a 4x All-Star, 3x Silver Slugger, 4x Gold Glove and one-time AL batting title champion. In 2018 he became the first player in MLB history to win the MVP, Silver Slugger, Gold Glove, batting title and World Series in the same season when he steered the Red Sox to victory over his current employers.

5. Anthony Rendon (Los Angeles Angels)

The Angels third baseman starred for the Washington Nationals last season as they clinched a first ever World Series win.

Rendon duly signed a reported seven-year, $245 million contract with the Angels in December and will be hoping to carry on from where he left off once the 2020 season gets underway. The 29-year-old posted career highs in home runs (34), RBIs (126), batting average (.319) on-base percentage (.412), slugging percentage (.598) and OPS (1.010) in 2019 on his way to a first All-Star appearance and second Silver Slugger award.

4. Alex Bregman (Houston Astros)

The Astros No. 2 finished behind only Mike Trout in the AL MVP voting last season, having carried the breakthrough form he showcased in 2018 into the following campaign.

Bregman hit 41 homers and racked up 112 RBIs in a MVP-caliber campaign which ended with the Astros falling narrowly short in the World Series. Bregman is a 2x All-Star, 1x Silver Slugger award winner and was part of the Astros team which beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2017 World Series.

3. Christian Yelich (Milwaukee Brewers)

The Brewers outfielder came close to second National League (NL) MVP award in succession last season as he continued to show his hitting prowess.

Yelich, who missed the final 18 games of last season, accumulated 44 home runs and 30 stolen bases, while leading the NL in batting average (.329) and on-base percentage. The 28-year-old duly won a second NL Hank Aaron Award and NL batting champion title. He is a 2x All-Star, 1x Gold Glove and 3x Silver Slugger.

2. Cody Bellinger (Los Angeles Dodgers)

The Dodgers first baseman and reigning NL MVP has continued to establish himself as one of the best players in the league since winning the NL Rookie of the Year award in 2017.

Bellinger enjoyed a superb 2019 season in which the 24-year-old hit 47 homers. In total, he averages 37 homers and 96 RBIs in his first three seasons in the MLB and promises to only improve on those numbers in years to come. Furthermore, he is a 2x All-Star, 1x Gold Glove and 1x Silver Slugger.

1. Mike Trout (Los Angles Angels)

The Angels center fielder has already forged an incredible career and is already considered as one of the best baseball players ever.

Trout is one of six players to win three AL MVP awards, having claimed top spot in the voting for the third time in his career in 2019 and the 28-year-old is seemingly the only active threat to Barry Bonds' all-time record of seven MVP titles. Along with his three MVP titles, Trout has four runner-up finishes in his eight years as a professional.

The Angels superstar hit a career-high 45 home runs in just 134 games last season and led the American League in on-base percentage and slugging percentage. Furthermore, Trout is a 8x All-Star, 7x Silver Slugger, 2x AL Hank Aaron Award winner and the 2012 AL Rookie of the Year.
