Novak Djokovic will look to continue his stunning career revival by claiming the 2018 US Open, which gets underway at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, New York on August 27.
The Serbian, who won the Wimbledon title back in July after defeating South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in the final, was victorious in the Cincinnati Masters this past weekend after crushing Roger Federer 6-4 6-4 in the final – amply demonstrating his scintillating form heading into the final Grand Slam of the year.
Federer, a five-time winner of the US Open (though not since 2008), will be amongst those hoping to challenge Djokovic for glory, but it seems the Serbian’s biggest threat will be defending champion Rafael Nadal.
The Spaniard comes into the tournament listed as first on both the seedings and the ATP rankings and won the Canadian Open earlier in the month to underline his credentials in chasing a fourth US Open title.
Other players to look out for are Juan Martin Del Porto, Alexander Zverev, Kevin Anderson, Marin Cilic, Grigor Dimitrov, Dominic Thiem and David Goffin, while John Isner presents the best hope of a US champion.
An American winner in the Women’s Singles would be nothing unusual, with last year’s final seeing Sloane Stephens defeat compatriot Madison Keys in the final. The two USA players will again be amongst the title favourites, though world number one Simona Halep enters as the top seed.
Caroline Wozniacki, reigning Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova are also capable of claiming the trophy, while only a fool would write off the chances of Serena Williams – even if she has struggled for form and fitness in recent months.
